Description
Visit some of Eastern Europe’s great and historic capitals, from St Petersburg to Budapest, and enter the Carpathian Mountains, one of the region’s most beautiful natural areas. Travel by local bus, train and private transport, and stay in city centre hotels and quaint mountain homestays. In St Petersburg you’ll walk the backstreets with a local guide to get an alternative view of this magnificent canal-lined baroque city then journey to riverside Novgorod, former capital and cradle of Russian civilization. Take the overnight train to Moscow to ride the ornate subway and enter the infamous Kremlin. Then it’s another sleeper train across the border to Ukraine and its fascinating capital Kyiv, set on the banks of the River Dnipro. Head from the city into the Carpathians to experience old-fashioned mountain life at a local home, hike into the high pastures or take a swim in a cool local river. Get a taste for café culture in historic Lviv then overnight to Budapest to end the tour in ‘The Pearl of the Danube’.
