Description
Discover the Avenue of the Volcanoes on this superb two-week Ecuador trek. Climb three 4,000m-plus volcanoes, including the active crater of Gagua Pichincha, and have the option of scaling 5,895m Cotopaxi. After sightseeing in the historic capital Quito you’ll trek to the summit of nearby Pasochoa then head northwards to Otavalo, an area steeped in Andean culture. From here set out for day hikes taking you to crater lakes and stunning mountain viewpoints. Pass through traditional Indian villages, hike along forest paths and through open grassland and upwards to volcanic scree slopes. Stop at colourful markets and ride the Adean ‘autoferro’ train before moving south for more hiking. Arrive in the spa town of Baños, the gateway to the Amazon, before experiencing a further two days of hiking. Here you’ll enter the Cotopaxi National Park, staying at its high mountain refuge and hiking to the emerald lagoon of Quilotoa.
