Description

 

Istria in northern Croatia is a land of rolling hills, age-old villages and fertile green valleys rolling down to the sea. It also makes for an excellent mountain biking destination, ideal for the regular cyclist looking for some superb cross-country riding in a little-known corner of Europe. Start in the picturesque coastal town of Novigrad, well known for its fine food and hospitality, then head inland into the Istrian hills. Pedal through forest to Motovun, with its pretty square, and stay in a splendidly restored Venetian palace. Cycle further inland through wine growing country and up to the central Istrian plateau to arrive in Pazin, the beautiful old capital of Istria. Head through the very heart of Istria to Buzet, the ‘city of truffles’, making sure you try this local delicacy in one of its excellent restaurants. Then it’s onwards into the CicarijaMountains, enjoying expansive views as you follow the limestone trails that criss-cross the range. Spend the night at the dramatic Poklon pass, then its downhill all the way to return to the coast at the historic seaside town of Lovran.
