Description
Journey from Quito deep into the Ecuadorian Andes for a short tour of Cayambe and Otavalo, two largely indigenous, highland towns. They are both surrounded by towering, snow-capped volcanic peaks and as well as spectacular scenery are bastions of traditional culture, too. The drive to Cayambe is exciting in itself, as you cross the equator and pass Pululahua Crater. Your first night in the region will be spent in the 400-year-old Hacienda Guachala, a charming residence, which started life in Inca times. The 5790m Cayambe Volcano dominates the area and you’ll have the option to take 4WD trips, horse ride and visit the Cayambe Volcano Refuge or ruins of Cochasaqui. Next move onto Otavalo, a town rightly famous for its crafts market, the largest in South America. You should see many locals proudly wearing colourful traditional dress and your local guide will help steer you in the direction of the town’s sights and best shopping spots as well.
